Who can apply online or by phone
You can replace a lost, stolen or damaged V5C online or by phone if you're the registered keeper and the details on the V5C can stay the same. The new logbook is posted to the address DVLA has on record, and you can tax the vehicle online at the same time.
What you'll need
- The registration number of the vehicle
- The vehicle identification number (VIN) or chassis number
- The name and postcode registered on the V5C

| Cost | Usually £25, paid by credit or debit card. There's no refund once you've used the service, for example if you later find the old V5C. |
| Time | Usually 5 to 7 working days by post. Contact DVLA if it hasn't arrived 2 weeks after you applied. |
| Tax | You can tax the vehicle online at the same time. |
| Online hours | Monday to Friday 7am to 9pm, Saturday and Sunday 7am to 8pm. |
When you can't use the online service
You can't use it if you need to change any of your details, if you don't have the vehicle in your possession, if you've already sent your V5C to DVLA for changes, if the vehicle is part of the DVLA fleet scheme, or if it's registered abroad, including the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or Ireland.
In those cases, and if you've just bought the vehicle and never received a V5C, the route is a postal application. The V62 form explained.
If you're not the registered keeper
You must be the registered keeper on the V5C to apply online. If you've just bought the vehicle, start with our guide to buying a car with no logbook.
Would you rather not do this yourself?
You don't need us. Everything above can be done yourself on GOV.UK. If you'd rather hand over the forms and the chasing, that's what we do, for a fee we tell you before you commit.
Questions people ask
Can I replace a lost V5C by phone?
Yes, if you're the registered keeper and none of the vehicle's details have changed. You'll need the same information as online: the registration number, the VIN or chassis number, and the name and postcode registered on the V5C.
Can I tax the vehicle before the new V5C arrives?
Yes. You can tax the vehicle online at the same time as you apply for the replacement. You still need to meet the legal obligations for drivers before you drive, including insurance and an MOT where one is needed.
What if I find my old V5C after applying?
You can't get a refund once you've used the online service, so the fee is spent either way.
What if the new logbook doesn't arrive?
Contact DVLA if it hasn't arrived 2 weeks after you applied. If you still haven't received it after 6 weeks and you haven't told DVLA, you'll have to pay £25 to get a replacement.
