The V62 form explained

The V62 is how you apply to DVLA for a V5C by post. It's the right form in some situations and the wrong one in others.

Checked against GOV.UK in October 2026. Fees and timescales change, so confirm on GOV.UK before you pay.

What the V62 is

The V62 is DVLA's application for a V5C (vehicle log book). You download it, fill it in, and send it to DVLA by post. If you also need to tax the vehicle, you may be able to take it to a Post Office instead.

When you need it

If you're the registered keeper and your V5C is simply lost, you usually don't need it. You can apply online or by phone instead.

What it costs

SituationFee
Changing vehicle details£25, by cheque or postal order payable to ‘DVLA, Swansea’
New vehicle, sent with the green new keeper slip from the most recent V5C£25 isn't asked for
New vehicle, no slip£25, by cheque or postal order
Taxing at a Post Office as wellTake the completed form and £25 to a branch that deals with vehicle tax

How long it takes

By post you'll usually receive the V5C after 4 weeks. Contact DVLA if it hasn't arrived by then. If you still haven't received it after 6 weeks and you haven't told DVLA, you'll have to pay £25 to get a replacement. Make sure you pay the correct postage.

Online or by phone, when you're eligible, it's quicker: usually 5 to 7 working days.

Where to get the form

Download it from GOV.UK: Apply for a vehicle registration certificate (V62). The postal address and payment instructions are on the form and on the GOV.UK guide.

Taxing the vehicle at the same time

You may be able to tax your vehicle at a Post Office and apply for a new V5C at the same time. Complete the V62, take it with £25 to a branch that deals with vehicle tax, and check the branch offers this service before you travel.

Want the V62 dealt with for you?

You don't need us. Everything above can be done yourself on GOV.UK. If you'd rather hand over the forms and the chasing, that's what we do, for a fee we tell you before you commit.
